First Aid at Work (Outdoor Sector)

Course Details

Delivery Method: Blended Learning. Online learning combined with attendance at a two day practical session.

Course Covers: The First Aid at Work (Outdoor Sector) course is designed for people working in outdoor, remote and higher-risk environments where access to emergency services may be delayed.

Delivered through blended learning, learners complete a 7-hour online study module before attending a two-day practical training course. Successful learners receive a nationally recognised First Aid at Work certificate, valid for three years.

The course covers the role and responsibilities of the First Aider, managing incidents, primary and secondary surveys, adult CPR, use of an AED (Defibrillator), recovery position, choking, bleeding and shock, and the treatment of minor and major injuries.

Learners will also cover burns and scalds, fractures, sprains and strains, head, neck and spinal injuries, chest injuries, and a range of medical emergencies including asthma, anaphylaxis, seizures, diabetes and poisoning.

Additional topics include environmental injuries such as hypothermia and heat-related illness, casualty evacuation considerations, and accident recording and reporting.

The course places particular emphasis on managing incidents in outdoor and remote locations, giving learners the skills and confidence to respond effectively when professional help may be some distance away.

Suitable For: This course is ideal for outdoor instructors, forest school leaders, activity centre staff, expedition leaders, countryside rangers, estate and agricultural workers, and anyone working in remote locations where access to emergency services may be delayed.

Requirements: There are no formal entry requirements or previous first aid qualifications needed to attend this course. Learners should be willing to participate in practical activities and assessments throughout the training.

Qualification Gained: Successful learners will receive a 3-Day First Aid at Work Certificate and a 16-Hour Active Aid Outdoor First Aid (+F) / Forest Schools Certificate, suitable for many Forest School, outdoor education and activity leadership requirements.

Fitness: his is an active, hands-on course delivered primarily through practical outdoor scenarios. Participants should be able to take part in practical activities, including kneeling, moving around uneven ground, and performing CPR on the floor as part of the assessment process. Please wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear suitable for outdoor environments. We recommend clothing that allows freedom of movement during practical exercises.
